About Alpacas

Alpacas are a domesticated species originating from South America and are from the camelid family. There are five camelids breeds: Alpacas, Camels, Llamas, Vicuñas and Guanacos.

There are two types of alpacas:

In Australia, the most common type of alpaca is the huacaya.

Huacaya Alpacas' fleece looks similar to that of a sheep's however alpacas do not produce lanolin making alpaca fleece hypoallergenic and easier to wash.

Suri Alpacas' fleece hangs in long lustrous locks and is often very fine in comparison to the huacaya.

Alpacas are herd animals and should always be at least kept in a pair. This is because alpacas can die or become seriously unwell due to loneliness. We recommend that if you are purchasing alpacas that the ideal number is three alpacas.
