Selecting Our First Girls
Selecting Our First Girls
In November 2020 we embarked on purchasing our first female Alpaca females. We went in with the idea of purchasing two to three Alpaca females of different colours.
We originally planned to only purchase girls of breeding age, being two years or older, but when we arrived at Highfield Alpacas we spotted Highfields Barbarella who was only six months of age and fell in love. Barbarella was difficult to categorise by colour as before her first shearing she was a rose grey but after shearing, she was classified as a fancy being medium brown, white and rose grey.
We then selected Highfields Utopia for the following reasons:
Proven breeder;
Produced two grey cria;
Did not spit when handled;
Did not struggle or cry when handled;
Bay Black fleece colour; and
Fleece Density.
Lastly, we selected Highfields Andamooka for the following reasons:
Fluffy Ears (Admittedly we fell in love with her beautiful face, her ears being one of them);
Dark Brown fleece colour;
Size - A compact medium sized Alpaca; and
Her dad is a Medium Grey and her mum is a Roan meaning she has a chance of producing grey and roan cria.
